Saint Celebrity

by Kamikaze Martian

If you haven’t heard by now, America’s current (but already fading) heartthrob Justin Bieber was witnessed flipping off excited fans at Disneyland on Valentines Day. Not to drag the issue on because according to certain websites, someone close to Bieber has already stated that Bieber is sorry for the incident which in my opinion is basically admitting guilt. But the uproar over the incident really got me thinking how pathetic people can get over someone they don’t and will never really know (aka celebrities). An army of devoted Justin Bieber fans called “Beliebers” tried to defend his reputation stating things like “he was just protecting his family”, “he’s only 17” or even worse “HE’S HUMAN!”. Let’s break these down.

#1 he was just protecting his family. What was he protecting his family from? All his defenders claim they or someone they know were there and witnessed the incident. Were lives threatened? Were things thrown? We have yet to hear any specific details other then Bieber might have been annoyed. But being annoyed is not even in the same universe as being threatened. I’ve seen people escorted from Disneyland just for exchanging harsh words. I’ve witness drug sniffing dogs used to find people of suspicious activity at the park. It’s no secret that Disneyland is filled with undercover security and yet these fans were able to get that close to Bieber and Gomez. Either Disneyland security sucks or they just didn’t feel the fans were a real threat.

#2 he’s only 17. The day before the Disneyland incident Bieber spent time with brain cancer patient Avalanna Routh (aka Mrs. Bieber). He’s old enough to handle such a serious situation as spending the day with a 6 year old cancer patient but fans want to take his picture at the happiest place on earth and all of a sudden “he’s just 17”.  Plus it’s not like he just turned 17. On March 1st 2012 (16 days after the Disneyland incident) Bieber will be 18. That’s old enough to join the armed forces and fight for your freedom. Legally he will be an adult so when is he going to act like one.

#3 He’s Human. This is probably their best augment because after all to err is human. But as humans we’re suppose to learn from our mistakes. It’s what separates us from other animals. It’s why we’ve been able progress so quickly as a species. But if you do a Google search for “Justin Bieber Finger” you’re directed to links upon links of stories and pictures of Bieber apologizing for flipping people off in the past. Learning from your mistakes is human and that means not making those mistakes again. But to carelessly continue making the same mistakes usually means you’re incredibly stupid or plain and simply don’t care.

“Beliebers” claim to have seen video of Bieber kindly asking fans not to take pictures before responding with the vulgarity. I have yet to see or find any such video that “Beliebers” claim exist. You also never hear any specific facts. Everything every “Belieber” claims is so very vague. What were they wearing? What was their ethnicity? How many of them were there? Were they all female? What exactly was Bieber protecting his family from? What else was said besides references to Twitter? Why didn’t Disneyland security get involved?

“Beliebers” claim the fans weren’t legitimate fans because they not only invaded Biebers privacy, but they “blasted it on twitter”. Well this photo was found on yfrog.com. The caption clearly reads “We’re hanging out with Justin Bieber at Disneyland”. The picture was taken in a very similar style as the fans who are being attacked by “Beliebers”.  They obviously did not care to respect Biebers privacy or were fearful of receiving a vulgar response as well otherwise they would not feel the need to be so sneaky.   In fact there’s websites filled with paparazzi styled photos of Bieber and Gomez that day and I’ve yet to see any negativity towards those sites for displaying them. If the issue is really about respecting Biebers privacy wouldn’t it be wrong for any one, personal or professional, to display pictures for the whole internet to have access to. “Beliebers” should be attacking these websites for diplaying these pictures and not respecting his privacy.

It really is sad when a celebrity can do no wrong. Everyone should be held to the same standards. And those who feel the need to protect celebrities should practice what you preach because one day your innocent star struck moment might quickly turn into an insulting embarrassment as well.
